Buy Naija To Grow The Naira

Many Nigerians are complaining about the constant fall in the value of the naira and they blame the government. But is the government really to blame? In truth, our insatiable appetite for all things foreign is to blame. No nation can become great if it is clothed, serviced and fed by other nations. It just will not happen. In lay man’s terms, a nation’s currency is like a promise by the issuing authority, in this case the Nigerian Government, to pay holders of the currency. In other words, currency is an assurance by a government on goods and services.

What happens when we spend our naira buying imported items and not made-in-Nigeria products is that our government is assuring the nation’s from which those imports come from and not our own nation. So imagine this scenario, imagine that Nigeria and other nations are football teams. How can we win if our supporters club keeps patronising other teams and not our own football team?

This is the self-inflicted injury we have inflicted on our dear naira and instead of blaming ourselves we are blaming government. I always fly Arik business class whenever I am travelling abroad except Arik does not fly on that route. Not only is an Arik ticket a fraction of the cost of a British Airways ticket, but the money I pay to Arik circulates in Nigeria and helps firm up the naira’s value. As I speak to you today, a British Airways business class to London is N2,103,666 while Arik business class is N551,545, yet our elite still fly BA.

But though Arik offers an affordable alternative to British Airways and other foreign airlines, our big men prefer to pay double what Arik charges to BA and other foreign airlines for the same services and yet they complain about the value of the naira. Arik’s planes are brand new and are more comfortable than British Airways. I know that for a fact because I have flown both. If we do not fly Arik, who would?

I have Nasco cornflakes and I have eaten Kellogs cornflakes. In terms of nutrition and taste they are almost indistinguishable. Yet our elite who will rather eat Kellogs than Nasco cornflakes, wonder why the naira is falling! Even something like Quaker Oats can be substituted with corn meal known locally as pap. Obasanjo Farms of Nigeria and other large scale poultry farms have the capacity to provide chicken for the entire nation. Since that is the case, why are we even buying imported chicken?

Imported chicken may be cheaper in financial terms but it is more expensive in health terms. These birds are heavily treated with various chemicals to plump them up and preserve them and artificially enhance their taste and by the time they hit our shores they are not as safe to consume as our domestic chicken. In fact, what is wrong if every family in Nigeria has a poultry in their backyard to give them eggs and meat? It is feasible. It is not beneath us.

My steward went to Makoko, which is one of the largest fishing communities in Lagos. He wanted to buy fish and they were selling imported frozen fish!
Yet in the very waters in front of them, there exist fresh fish that is more nutritious than the cheap frozen fish they were selling. We keep spending over N1 billion importing rice when our own farmers are capable of meeting our national demand for rice. But for some reason, Nigerians just prefer to buy imported rice. The imported rice we buy in Nigeria is not as good as our local rice because it has been stored for years in silos and treated with chemicals.

Moreover, every time you buy it, your money is going out of Nigeria to service an economy in Asia. The end result is that their currency gains value while ours loses value. Have you ever wondered why European Premiership clubs are so interested in Nigeria? It is because Nigerians spend billions travelling to Europe to watch their games, buy their merchandise and promote their leagues. Yet, back at home, we would not be caught dead watching our own local league.

If we will not spend money on made-in-Nigeria goods and services, how can we expect our naira to hold its value and appreciate?

Obviously we cannot cut ourselves off from the world. No nation is an island, but at least we can fly Nigerian airlines, eat locally produced food and patronise our football league. If we do this, not only will our economy grow and produce jobs for Nigerians, it will also make our goods and services improve in value such that they will be attractive enough to be imported.
We may approach the United Kingdom for loans to fund the 2016 budget. The funniest thing is that the British Prime Minister, David

Cameron, is famous for using the London Underground public transport facilities. What is wrong if our ministers use public transportation once in a while? What is wrong if they enter a taxi to work? And even if we must buy cars for government officials why must we buy foreign cars?

Silverbird bought Innoson vehicles as official cars for our staff. The buses are roomy, very comfortable and extremely durable. I have never lived to regret these purchases for even a day. But most of all, I know that my purchase helps to keep jobs in Nigeria and improve the value of the naira. I urge you to do the same. We have no other country but Nigeria and it is you and I that will make it what it is.

Can you imagine how far Innoson would go if we spent the N30 billion we use in buying cars for our elected and appointed officials at the federal, state and local government levels on Innoson vehicles? We must make hard choices if we want Nigeria to be better and spending borrowed money on convoys for elected officials is not a priority. It is a luxury that Nigeria cannot afford at this time in her history. If we buy Naija We Will Grow the Naira.

Finally, I must say that I am pleasantly surprised at the level of support the hashtag, #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira has gotten since I originated it on Twitter. Within three days, the hashtag had featured on the BBC and on CNN.
Let me thank the ordinary Nigerians who joined me in making the hashtag take off. If you are manufacturer or provider of made-in-

Nigeria goods and services, tweet them at me using the hashtag #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira and I will help you promote your product. I also want to thank Dr. Innocent Chukwuma, the founder and Chief Executive of Innoson Motors for personally coming to Abuja to deliver my personal Innoson car which I now drive about in Abuja. I advised Dr. Chukwuma to make a bullet proof version so our high profile politicians will not have to buy imported bullet proof luxury car and he said to me ‘Distinguished Senator, just give me three months’.

My name is Ben Murray-Bruce and I just want to say #BuyNaijaToGrowTheNaira!

  7. WOW!!! THE MADE IN NIGERIA MINI BUS BY 7 UNIZIK ENGINEERS, LOOKING BETTER THAN EVER
The thought that this mini bus was designed and constructed in Nigeria, by Nigerian Engineers and not foreign Engineers, working here as expatriates; is indeed a hard one to believe, as it is looking more foreign than home made.

The thought that it was produced inside the University workshop of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, by 7 Graduate Engineers of Mechanical Engineering Department, of the Faculty of Engineering, is certainly a hard bone to swallow.

These lads have given in their best, to put up this gigantic project within a very short frame of time, and thus, it has become the talk of the town.

One will wonder how undergraduates, who know they have got very limited time to stay in the University and so, should enjoy their last days within the 4-walls of the University, still gave in to stressful and strenuous nights at the workshop, just to write their names on the sands of time.

These guys are worth all the laurels and awards in this country at this particular point in time and thus, be given immediate employment, so that their brains and zeal towards invention are kept in line.

    They are:
    EZEIGWE CALLISTUS CHITOO
    OBINANI VICTOR CHIMDIKE
    NWOBODO NNAMDI MIRACLE
    OGBU THADDEUS IKENNA
    OMINIGBO FIDELIS IGHO
    EZEANOLUE IFEANYI EMMA
    OKORO CHINAZA

Obliviously, these students are geniuses, as it is only people in that category that can put up something like this, using crude equipment and 100% local content. They improvised for barely everything that can be found in that mini bus, from the chassis to its roofing.

The bus was even test driven in front of the Minister of state for Education, Prof Anthony Onwuka and other top dignitaries present during the National Universities Commission (NUC), held in UNIZIK. This goes a long way to tell the world out there that, this is Naija’s giant invention, its has been tested, and its indeed it can be trusted.

A warm kudoz! to these guys, for it is certain that a bright future awaits them. A big congratulations to their supervisor and the Head of Department at that time, Dr. C.H Achebe, for giving his boys every necessary vigor they needed to carry out this work, and above all, for being leading by example.

We wish them the best in their field of specialization, as we look forward to bringing our country on the top list of Innovators in the world.

  16. Dear Senator Murray-Bruce,

I write to introduce myself. I am a current student of Cardiff University studying International Public Relations and Global Communications Management.

I’m currently researching the effectiveness of social media campaigns in the diffusion of innovations using the campaign #Buynaijatogrowthenaira as a case study.

The purpose of this message is to seek your consent to interview you for this research. Since I am presently in the UK, the interview could take either of three forms most convenient for you; telephone, Skype or email.

I am writing to you because key influencers (such as yourself) play a very important role in the diffusion of any innovation like the #buynaija. Thus, your input will be very useful for my research. Nevertheless, I understand if you may not wish to be interviewed or prefer to be anonymous for the interview which is still valid research method accepted by the university.

Please let me know if you would kindly grant an interview. (umeugoac@cardiff.ac.uk or follow me back on Twitter)

    Best Regards,

  20. Allow me to share some thoughts with you further to the video recording you shared on social media about the academic achievements of Nigerians in America and also in Europe. Allow me to say by way of information that I live in UK. This may be in a wider context however, it is what I say is the emancipation of not only Nigerians but Africans as well in the clutches of perpetual economic slavery that we are all in even today 2016. The laudable academic and professional achievements of many Nigerians in foreign countries where they commit their intellect and dedication to the growth of these economies continues to advance the development goals of these nations and deprive our own country of the much needed human capital to develop our own nation. We should not be celebrating these achievements in isolation of the wider impact of what their contribution should be in growing our own country. There is a rather warped perception by professionals in the diaspora that opportunity for career progression should be predicated on hard work , dedication to duty, commitment, and high sense of responsibility, but this not necessarily the case in foreign countries. Many are acutely frustrated and disillusioned when these great virtues do not reward them as it does the Europeans or nationals of these countries even when they are not as educated or even as experienced as they are. The question however is ‘ why should the interests of the nationals of these countries not take precedence over those of ethnic minorities or immigrants ? They own and have built their multinational companies, they have developed their infrastructure though granted with exploited foreign slave labour as well, they have owned the vision that has improved their quality of life over centuries. Immigrants come into these countries and expect a level playing field for all and sundry. This is delusional. The primary interest of nationals of a country should be served before those of others because their country is testament to many years of hard work and visionary leadership. As long as well educated Nigerians continue to seek employment in organisations owned and run by indigenes of these countries , their expectation should be to understand the preference will always be given to their own people and rightly so. The deliberate decision to accord an immigrant though with the international passport of the said country, second or third class treatment in career advancement in these countries is perpetuated to sustain what they believe is rightly theirs to control , manage and benefit from. The reality is this, until Nigerians or Africans in the wider context work hard to secure economic independence by establishing their own companies with their country’s leadership understanding that without such power in their nations we will forever be slaves to the economic dominance wielded by foreign countries without hope of we ever becoming a nation that prides itself in being truly independent and improving it’s quality of life. The earning capacity of Nigerians overseas in no way defines our growth or advancement as a people. Accolades of our contribution to progress the living standards of countries where we reside speaks of our continuous ‘ economic refugee ‘ status in these countries. As black people we fail to understand the need for sacrifice to build our nation. Worse still even in times of prosperity we grossly mismanage our resources and flight them to the same countries who hold us in contempt for our share incompetence in the utilization of our God given resources to our own benefit. The price we are paying in Nigeria, from the loss of credible, reliable, professional , progressive human capital resource is incalculable and generations yet unborn will define us as a wasted , selfish, corrupt and visionless generation who had no thoughts for the future. We have the resources to become the economic powerhouse in Africa and can with a resolute leadership build a foundation that will empower us economically thereby encouraging our highly intellectual country men and women return home to truly build their nation and be proud doing so leaving a history and legacy our young ones can take courage from , take the baton of patrotism and run with.
